Latest News: Aadhaar to be mandatory for driving licence

The Central government has asked all states to make Aadhaar card a must requirement in order to acquire a driving licence in India.

The Centre has taken this step to check people from having multiple driving licences for a single name.

People are using multiple licences to break the law, because if one licence is suspended for any traffic offence, then the person has another to keep going.

Also, multiple licences create the risk of fake identities as well.

Aadhaar to be mandatory

This new scheme is expected to come into effect from October 2017.

The issue of driving licences have a centralised database of sorts and it also helps to prevent people getting multiple licences from different RTOs in different states.

The National Informatics Centre has already uploaded data in RTOs across the country.

The database can be accessed anytime by RTO to check whether the applicant already has a driving licence in some other state or not.

The Union Road Transport Ministry has begun work to help the state government to incorporate changes in issuing a licence.

The government says that more than 18 crore driving licences have been issued so far, a country with the population of over 120 crores. There seems to be a lot of work to do.
