Mubarak Begum Legendary playback Singer Passes Away at 80

Legendary Singer Mubarak Begum died after prolonged illness at her residence in suburban Jogeshwari (Mumbai) late on Monday. She was 80.

“Mubarak Begum is no more with us. She passed away today at 9:30pm at her residence in Jogeshwari. She was unwell since quite some time,” a family member said.

Mubarak Begum was born in Rajasthan. She moved to Mumbai when she was 10-year-old. Among her favourite memories is singing “Woh na aayenge palat kar” from Devdas which released in 1955 starring Dilip Kumar and Vaijayantimala.

Mubarak Begum has sung songs for legendary directors and actors right from Kamal Amrohi’s Daera (1953) Devta Tum Ho Mera Sahara to Dilip Kumar’s Devdas Woh Na Aayenge Palat Kar. It was said that Mubarak used to take up all the songs which Lata Mangeshkar used to reject citing date issues. However she didn’t she much success in her career as during that time veterans Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle were leading. Begum’s career saw an immense downfall during 1970’s and 1980’s. One of her last songs was Saanwariya Teri Yaad Mein for Ramu Toh Diwana Hai (1980).

She is remembered for singing scores of songs, duets and ghazals for Bollywood, mainly during the 1950s-1970s. Begum, who sang the evergreen song “Kabhi tanhaiyon mein hamari yaad ayegi” from the 1961 movie “Hamari Yaad Aayegi”, has not been keeping well for the last few years.
