The decision to award Sania Mirza with Khel Ratna comes after the Indian Tennis star’s strong showing in the recent, major tournaments. Mirza eventually became the first Indian woman to reach the top spot in doubles rankings. Sania won her career’s first ever women’s doubles Grand Slam title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis in June.

Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan said the Sports Minister Sarbanada Sonowal has indeed recommended to the tennis exponent for the highest honour given for achievement in sports.

Sania Mirza’s name now will be forwarded to the Sports Minister for final approval. Sania, whose application was approved by the sports ministry after the deadline for nominations, was the clear favourite for the award. And the final approval is just a formality.
