Recently, India had a convincing win against France when they won two-match series 2-0 so the team was seeming to be in the form but Indian team failed to keep the momentum. They suffered a humiliating defeat against Spain by 1-4 in the opening match of the 3-Game series at Sant Cugat del Valles in Spain on August 11,2015.
Spain Beats India By 4-1 In European Tour Hockey Opening Match
It was in the very beginning of the first quarter that they took an early lead over India when Spain blew the ball to the net in the 10th minute. Though India soon recovered the party in the 11th minute when SV Sunil scored an excellent goal. Hence, it was an equal quartered dominance of both. But Spain regrouped in the 3rd quarter to score their second goal. They were in no mercy to Indian defense as they slotted 2 more goals in the fourth and final quarter to end the session with 4-1. Spain easily ruled the match over the Indians as there was no juice in the match left after the first quarter.
Surprisingly, India is at the 8th position in the FIH ranking while Spain is at the 10th position. These 2 teams have met previously in 2013 World League Semifinals and Spain defeated India by 4-2. But later in the World Cup 2014 league match, India put their efforts and drew the match 1-1. Yes, it is our national game but it is faded or lost the charm in the hockey fans.
Despite Indian coach and captain are always ready to try the newest strategy in the matches. The next match is scheduled at the same venue on August 12, 2015 at 14:30 IST. India are desperate to jump back into the series and if they don’t, they will lose the series and the European Tour will be a failure. India will have to bounce back to jump into the FIH ranking and put an effort to make the major upsets in the upcoming matches so as to remove the ditched down image of the current team performance.
It would be interesting to see the next match strategy as India would have their to make the defense part ready so that Spain can’t counter attack like they did in the consecutive quarters in the opening match. Let’s hope that Harjot Singh, Rupinder Singh and Manpreet Singh get their form back and play with full throttle.
