Kirpal Singh was in prison at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore since 1992 found dead in his cell on Monday.
Kirpal Sing who spent 24 years of prison in Pakistan on the charges of spying. Even Pakistan authorities booked the formal naval commander, Kulbhushan Jadhav, in their custody for a month, for terrorism.
According to the reports in media from Pakistan, Kirpal Singh, 50, was found dead in his cell at Kot Lakhpat Jail in the early hours of Monday.
According to his relatives in Gurdaspur, he was with the Indian Army for eight years. Ashwani Singh, Kirpal Singh’s nephew told the media that his uncle had written many letters saying he was being tortured in the jail. In his last letter in February this year, he said the jail authorities had locked him up in a “dark cell.”
The family of Kirpal Singh is in Delhi on Delhi today to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. “We did not get to see him alive. The government should at least help us in getting back his body. We know he has been murdered in jail. The government should get to the root of this,” said Mr. Ashwani Singh.
According to the reports of Pakistani media, Kirpal Singh was sentenced to death in a serial bomb blasts case in Pakistan’s Punjab state.
Later, he was freed of bomb blast charges by the Lahore High Court but his death sentence was not changed for unknown reasons.
According to the Pakistani officials said his body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, for post mortem. Judicial magistrate have recorded the statements of some prisoners.
Now, the latest development in the story is that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that she wants to investigate whether Kirpal Singh died of a heart attack in Pakistan jail.
She also assured to bring back the body of Kirpal Singh from Pakistan.
She further said; “Post mortem will be conducted on Kirpal Singh’s body when it is brought here in India.”
The minister further added, “Judicial committee that was earlier in existence should be restored. It used to meet our prisoners in Pakistan.”
We simply hope, Swaraj keeps her promises.
