Sania Mirza has created history by winning the Women’s Doubles games with Martina Hingis on Saturday. Martina Hingis is a Wimbledon champion for the first time since 1998. The 34-year-old Swiss player, already a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, teamed up with Sania Mirza of India to win the women’s doubles title.

This is Sania Mirza’s first ever Women’s Doubles Grand Slam title.

Sania’s partner Hingis held her serve to seal a 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5 win over Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

The match had been stopped at 5-5 in the third set to allow the roof to be shut as darkness fell on the All England Club.

Sania Mirza is winner of three mixed doubles Grand Slam trophies. She won Australian Open (2009) and French Open (2012) with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and the US Open with Bruno Soares last year.

Hingis has won Wimbledon doubles with Helena Sukova and Nana Novotna in 1996 and 1998 respectively.

Shahrukh Khan and other celebrities also congratulate Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis by tweeting. Here are their tweets.
