Snakes are one of the most feared organisms surviving on this planet. There are over 3000 types of species of snakes on this planet.
Deadliest Snakes in the world
- The bite of an inland or western taipan—Oxyuranus microlepidotus, also called, appropriately, the fierce snake—delivers a veritable witch’s brew of toxins.
- The coastal taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus) produces venom that is nearly identical to that of its inland cousin. Its bite is lethal in more than 80 percent of untreated cases.
- The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the longest venomous snake in the world. The snake’s venom is so strong and so voluminous that it can kill an elephant in just a few hours. Death also results in at least 50 to 60 percent of untreated human cases.
- The banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) is a highly venomous relative of the cobra. Its venom is essentially a neurotoxin that induces paralysis.
Facts about Snakes
Most people don’t know that less than 5% of snake species are poisonous. They come in different sizes. There are species as big as 20 metres and as small as a few centimeters.
There are also varieties where snakes don’t even need to bite their prey. They just spit on their enemies. Snakes do not have ears. They find their prey by vibrations from the ground.
Snakes do not have legs to move. They have scales beneath their body made of keratin – the same material our nails are made of.
There are a few varieties of snakes that are found even in water. The snakes have highly flexible jaws which allow them to swallow large preys sometimes even bigger than their heads.

There is a funny fact about snakes. The snakes have transparent eyelids. It seems like they sleep with eyes open. The snakes heel by a unique method. Once or twice every year, they shed their skins to expose new and perfect skin.
