After US and China confirmed the pact and handed over the instruments to the UN, India warded off pressure from the US and China at the G20 summit when the US and China tried to set 2016 as a deadline to ratify the climate deal.

On Saturday, India’s Sherpa at the Summit, chief of NITI Aayog – Aravind Panagariya said that India and several other countries believe they cannot confirm the deal due to various legal barriers.

Panagariya said that there is no deadline to my mind but we will make submissions of progress. The US and China, 26 countries have ratified, accounting for 39.06 per cent of global emissions.

It said that It is fair to say that India has felt the importance of emissions reduction and has made some efforts.

In a joint statement with US president Barack Obama, PM Modi had said in the month of June that India had begun the processes to enable the Paris deal to enter into force.

The Today’s article said that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was optimistic and hopeful that the agreement can be brought into force by the end of this year, Indian officials do not seem to think this way. After all, New Delhi has a dilemma to address.

It said that India pledged to aggressively ramp up its production of clean energy like wind energy, hydro-power and solar power. This entails the transfer of proper technologies from other countries and China can provide a lot of useful experiences and technologies.
