Dattatreya Jayanti also known as Datta Jayanti, celebrates the birthday of Hindu God Dattatreya (Datta) who is a combined form of the powerful trinity i.e. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Datta was the son of Atri and Anasuya. He was born during the Pradosh period.

Datta Jayanti is observed every year on a poornima of the Margashirsha month by the Hindu calendar. This year it is being celebrated today i.e. on December 11. The timing of the same will be from 10:59 am today to December 12, 10:42 am.

The puja and vrat of Diety Datta is mainly celebrated in Maharashtra. Devotees believe that they benefit in all aspects of life by performing puja on Dattatreya Jayanti but the main significance of this day is that it protects individuals from ancestral issues.

Like other pujas, the devotees wake up early, take bath in holy water bodies, and observe fast for the day. Specific flowers, incense stick, lamp, and sweets are offered during the puja ceremony. One should sing devotional songs and read devotional book like Avadhuta Gita and Jivanmukta Gita which are also called Dattatreya’s sayings. During the course of the puja, one must apply sandalwood paste, vermillion, and turmeric to the idol or photo of the deity.

It is also important that after the puja commences, devotees should take seven circles around the Lord Datta’s idol distribute prasad and aarti to everyone in the puja. Chanting mantras like “Sree guru dattatreyaya namah” or Om Shri Gurudev Datta is quite beneficial for purity in mind and soul.

Temples like Manik Prabhu holds a seven days festival that is dedicated to God Datta and a lot of celebration takes place from Ekadashi to Purnima. In addition, seven days before the jayanti, reciting recitation of the Shri Gurucharitra is an important ritual that starts the festival.

In Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has organised a three-day-long fete, which began on Tuesday, December 10. The day one of the fete began with Sankeertana Yatra and Anasuya Jayanti celebrations in which the women devotees carried out a procession in the area. The procession is said to be started from Bolarameshwara Temple ended at Kamadhenu Mahashakthi Ganapathi Temple.

Believers of Datta carried the idols of Anasuya, Athrimuni, and Dattatreya in the procession as they sang devotional songs of Athrimuni and Anasuya.

Temples dedicated to Dattatreya are located pan India, but the most important ones are said to be in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Dattatreya found twenty-four gurus in Nature and Society and they became an integral part of several scriptures.
