Former Sri Lanka Player Nuwan Zoysa Banned For Six Years For Trying To Fix Matches

A piece of shocking and breaking news is coming from the cricket world, as the former fast bowler and coach of team Sri Lanka, Nuwan Zoysa is banned for about six years. The coach is accused of match-fixing and attempts of malpractices and corruption. The decision was taken by the board on 28th April 2021, that is, on Wednesday. The matter is not very fresh and in fact, back on 31st October 2018, coach Zoysa was suspended on a provisional basis. Well, this news came as a shock for the fans of Zoysa, who worshipped and made him his ideal. They must have been extremely disappointed in him.

Sri Lanka's Nuwan Zoysa Banned

In a statement given by ICC GM, Alex Marshall, he stated that the faster bowler and coach of the Sri Lankan team should have set an example for others, however, he did the exact opposite of it. Instead of showcasing himself as a role model, he got involved with the manipulators and corruptor and corrupted others. He further added that formulating to fix a game is like double-crossing the foundations and core of sports principles and in no circumstance, the board will tolerate such an unethical act. Nuwan Zoysa, who is 42 years now, has taken part in 30 test matches and has played a total of 95 matches in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) representing Sri Lanka.

Zoysa was alleged of corruption and match-fixing in the year 2018 after his session as the coach of Sri Lanka for the T10 tournament was coordinated in the UAE in the year 2017. In the ICC’s final verdict, it was stated that the former bowling coach of the Sri Lankan team met the suspect in Colombo. Not only the bowler was involved in the whole picture but also a person named, Mr W was also involved in match-fixing. As per the ICC’s judgement, as Zoysa was the coach of the Srilanka at that time, he was the best-suited man who could fix the match as he knew about each and every player.

Therefore the Mr W approached Zoysa, who then offered a deal to one of the bowlers of Sri Lanka. The bowler who was involved in the fixing was asked to intentionally let go 12 to 15 runs in the upcoming match against Bangladesh, in exchange for the good hefty sum of money. However, the bowler refused the offer and did not agree to it. The panel found Nuwan Zoysa liable for violating articles related to match-fixing, tempting others to violate decorum and sports code and found the dishonest persons inadequate in proofing their innocence and banned the former fast bowler of Sri Lanka for six years.
