Gold-Shirt Man Datta Phuge was killed by at least 11 people in the park in front of his son

Pune: Police said that A businessman 48 years old from Pune was bludgeoned to death in front of his son. The businessman was in the limelight in 2012 after he bought a gold shirt worth over Rs 1 crore.


Datta Phuge was the businessman from the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune district. Phuge had become famous in the town after he presented himself a ‘gold shirt’ weighing about 3.5 kg and worth Rs 1.27 crore in 2012.

Minimum 12 persons attacked the businessman Datta Phuge in an open ground in Dighi area at around 11.30 pm last night with stones and a sharp weapon and killed him on the spot in the front of his son.

Navnath Ghogare who is an Inspector at Dighi Police station said that According to the primary information, businessman Phuge and his son were invited by one of the suspects, who know each other, to celebrate a birthday. He also said that police are investigating how Phuge reached at the open ground in Dighi area park where he was killed by the suspects.

The police said that 22 years old son of Phuge was spared by the attackers. The son too had reached the spot following a similar birthday invitation and witnessed of his father’s murder.

The deceased Datta Phuge was the husband of a former corporator from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Phuge was also into money lending and chit fund business.

Inspector Ghogare said that Police have detained four persons and suspect that dispute over a money transaction between them could be the motive behind the murder of Phuge.
