Government plans water taxi service on the Yamuna

In order to develop tourism in the National Capital Region (NCR) the Ministry of Shipping, as well as Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), is taking a number of measures to launch a project “water taxi” on the Yamuna. The service is going to run from Delhi’s Wazirabad barrage and will headed to Fatehpur Jat which is located in Uttar Pradesh.

“Taking a ride on the pilot stretch will take about 30-40 minutes. During pilot run we will either hire the boats engaged by the National Cadet Corps or hire from the agencies that provide such motorized boats. Once the infrastructure and jetties are ready, we will bring in vessels that run on both electricity (using battery power) and diesel,” an official involved in this project told a news agency.

The stretch from Sonia Vihar to Tronica City which is 16-kilometre in total is projected to be enclosed by the water taxi in around 45 minutes. The central government is going to spend Rs 28 crore, comprising the cost of building terminals, dredging along with the cost of vessels. This would be a first-of-its-kind recreational project for the city’s citizens and would also work for the drive of conveyance.

Soon, You’ll Be Able To Travel From Delhi To Uttar Pradesh In A ‘Water Taxi’ On Yamuna River

In the first phase, the service is going to be delivered in the upstream portion of Wazirabad Barrage, comprising three locations such as Sonia Vihar, Jagatpura and Tronica City.

The chairman of IWAI, Prabir Pande said, “The Principal Committee of the National Green Tribunal gave a No Objection Certificate to the project. The land acquisition with the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi governments is in an advanced stage. It will take a few months, and after the acquisition, we will start the trial of the vessel.”

Mail Today has gain access to exclusive snaps of the vessel. Pointing out on the development, Lok Sabha MP from North-East Delhi and BJP unit president, Manoj Tiwari said, “Delhiites will now feel like Goa on the Yamuna.”

A water taxi or a water bus is sometimes also known as a sightseeing boat, which is a watercraft used to deliver public or private transport. Service may be planned with numerous stops, functioning in a similar manner to a bus, or on-demand to a lot of locations, functioning in a related manner to a taxi. A boat service carrying in the middle of two points would usually be termed as a ferry rather than a water bus or taxi.
