IRCTC Refund Policy 2019: New refund rules, charges levied for cancellation of e-tickets

In the past two days there has been several cancellation of railway services due to heavy rains as well as water-logging in few areas in Mumbai city and a few adjoining areas. IRCTC also offers the facility of online ticket cancellation through its official website at irctc.co.in and mobile app. But among such difficulty, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has come up with new rules to refund the passengers.

According to the IRCTC website, the online ticket cancellation should be completed within the prescribed time limits under these rules for accessing their refunds. The process of refund depends on the nature as well as status of the e-ticket.

Here is the list of charges for cancellation of e-tickets by IRCTC before the preparation of reservation charts:

E-tickets which are booked through IRCTC’s website, can only be cancelled through online facility till chart preparation of the train. According to the extant Railway Refund Rules, the refund will be granted by PRSA system.

If the ticket is offered for termination in advance of more than forty eight hours of the scheduled departure of the train, the passenger will be asked to stand these charges:

Rs 240 will be deducted for the cancellation of first AC/executive class tickets

Rs 200 will be deducted for the cancellation of 2 AC/first class tickets

Rs 180 will be deducted for the cancellation of 3 AC/ AC chair car/ 3 AC economy class tickets

Rs 120 will be deducted for the cancellation of sleeper class tickets

Rs 60 will be deducted for the cancellation of second class tickets

Cancellation of reserved train tickets within 48 to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train will be deducted 25 per cent of the booking amount.

For the cancellation of reserved train tickets, within 12 to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, 50 per cent of the booking amount will be deducted.

For the cancellation of train tickets which are booked under the tatkal quota, no refund is going to be granted by Indian Railways. On the other hand, in case, the train is late by three or more hours, passengers can then claim for the refund by filing the TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt).

Steps to file TDR

Follow the below mentioned simple steps in order to file TDR.

At first, you have to log on to the official IRCTC website at https://www.irctc.co.in/nget/train-search

On the homepage, go to ‘My Transaction’ under ‘My Account’

After that choose the ‘file TDR’ option

As soon as you click that, the reason for ticket cancellation will be asked

After stating your reason, you have to then click on the ‘file TDR’ button.
