Senior Congress leader Jaipal Reddy dies at 77

In the early hours of Sunday, Former Union minister and senior Congress leader S Jaipal Reddy passed away at the age of 77. Reddy is survived by two sons and a daughter. In his last moments he was at a private hospital in Hyderabad where he died.

Jaipal Reddy was going through some medical treatment at Asian Institute of Gastro-enterology at Gachibowli as he had been suffering from pneumonia for quite a some time.

His condition suddenly turned critical on Saturday night and then he breathed his last at 1.29 am.

Sudini Jaipal Reddy was born on January 16, 1942 at Madgul village in Telangana’s Mahbubnagar district to Sudini Durga Reddy and Yashodamma. He did his post graduation from Osmania University, Hyderabad.

He was an Indian politician who was the member of the 15th Lok Sabha and was the Minister of Science and Technology. He has also represented the Chevella constituency of Telangana as well as he had been an active Congress worker.

In his initial days he came out in protest against the Congress during Emergency in the year 1975 and then later joined BJP where he had been its general secretary between 1985 and 1988. He then later returned to the Congress in the 90s.

He was also elected to Rajya Sabha and was the floor leader of Janata Dal in RS in the years between 1990 and 1996.

He has also served as Information and Broadcasting Minister in IK Gujral government. He has also served as Petroleum minister in Manmohan Singh government and then later served as the Urban Development minister. He has won the best parliamentarian award in the year 1998.

Many of the politicians from the party as well as from opposition parties reacted and expressed their condolence on the loss. These are as follows:

The Rashtrapati Bhavan quoted the President as saying in a statement: “Sorry to hear of the passing of Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, former Union Minister. He was a thinking person’s politician and an outstanding parliamentarian. My condolences to his family and many associates,”

The Prime Minister’s office also tweeted: “Shri Jaipal Reddy had years of experience in public life. He was respected as an articulate speaker and effective administrator. Saddened by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers in this hour of grief”.

“With his razor sharp intellect & biting wit, he was also a powerful spokesperson of the party to which he belonged. He is known for cherishing and upholding democratic values. A tireless champion of the vulnerable & marginalized sections, his absence will be profoundly felt.” Vice President Venkaiah Naidu tweeted.

A tweet from Congress Party reads: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Union Minister Jaipal Reddy. A senior Congress leader, he served as an LS MP 5 times, an RS MP 2 times and as an MLA 4 times.We hope his family and friends find strength in their time of grief.”

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m sorry to hear about the sad demise of former Union Minister & veteran Congress leader Shri Jaipal Reddy Garu. An outstanding parliamentarian, great son of Telangana, he dedicated his entire life towards public service. My deepest condolences to his family & friends.”
