Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, has moved a bill in the Rajya Sabha to split the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two different Union territories that is Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. Previously, Home Minister Amit Shah proposed to eliminate Article 370 that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Home Minister said that the Article 370 is going to be withdrawn from the day of the President’s sanction.

There were chaotic scenes in the House as soon as Union Minister Amit Shah declared the exclusion of Article 370, as the opposition, which is led by Congress, showed the strong protest in contradiction of this government move.

The statement read, “There has been a long pending demand of people of Ladakh, to give it the status of a Union Territory to enable them to realise their aspirations. The Union Territory of Ladakh will be without Legislature,”

Speaking on removing of Article 370, Amit Shah said, “It is a wrong notion that Kashmir is with India because of Article 370 and not because of the letter of accession signed in 1947. No step has been taken in the past because of vote bank politics, but we are not bothered about the vote bank. We should not waste even a second to remove Article 370. We are ready for debate and voting on this issue. Let the House debate.”

Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti also protested and weeted, “Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K.”

Tensions has been increased in the Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night after Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti as well as Sajad Lone were put under house arrest as the authorities forced restrictions in numerous districts in the state.

“I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight & the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store,” National Conference leader Omar Abdullah had tweeted.

Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti  on the other hand said, “How ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people & their voices are being muzzled in J&K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India.”

Formerly, the administration has also called off the Amarnath Yatra in an unprecedented move as well as asked all tourists and visitors to leave the state immediately.

On the other hand, Kashmir carries on remaining on the edge as restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC in Srinagar district have been enforced. As of the security measure the mobile internet services were broken in many areas all over the Valley in order to maintain law and order.
