Kanubhai, The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, died at age of 87

Kanubhai, The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, died at age of 87 : Kanubhai Gandhi – the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, passed away on Monday at a private hospital, Surat, Gujarat. Following a cardiac arrest, Kanubhai was admitted to hospital. He was 87.

Kanubhai Gnadhi was the son of Mahatma Gandhi’s 3rd son Ramdas Gandhi, along with his wife Shivalaxmi. Kanubhai had been living at an accommodation at the Radha Krishna temple run by Punjabi Samaj for the last three months.


On 22nd October, he was admitted to the hospital after the cardiac arrest. He had also suffered a paralysis attack.

The close friend of kanubhai – Dhimant Badhiya said that Kanubhai died at 8.30 pm today at a Surat hospital.
Kailash Chhabra who is the caretaker of Kanubhai and a member of Punjabi Saman, told reporters that Doctors had said that he had also suffered a lung failure in the last few days.
About Kanubhai Gandhi:
Kanubhai was a former NASA scientist. After living in the USA for over four decades, he had come back to India in 2014.

Kanubhai was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Kanubhai also worked with the US Defense Department on the wing structure of fighter aircraft. He along with his wife, had decided to spend the rest of his life in India.

Kanubhai along with his wife wanted to spend his last days in India. Kanubhai had no child. They stayed at different places in Nagpur, Wardha, and Delhi, before going to to Surat three months ago.

Kanubhai lived at various places in Gujarat. After this, he moved to an old age home in the national capital. Recently, Kanubhai went back to Surat, Gujarat where he was provided an accommodation by the Punjabi Samaj Trust.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had interacted with him during Kanubhai’s stay at Delhi. The Prime Minister, expressing grief over his death, tweeted that Pained by the demise of Kanubhai Gandhi, the grandson of Gandhi Ji. Remembering my various interactions with him. May his soul rest in peace.

Members of the Punjabi Samaj trust said that the last rites of Kanubhai will be performed on Tuesday afternoon at a local crematorium.
