The University Grants Commission(UGC) released the list of 22 forged universities in the country. In this category, Uttar Pradesh topped with 8 forged universities in the state. The forged universities are those universities which are unrecognized, self-styled, and not granted by the University Grants Commission(UGC).
What is the University Grants Commission?
UGC: It was first formed in 1945 to supervise the work of three central universities of Delhi, Banaras, and Aligargh. Later, the responsibility of UGC extended all over India in the year of 1947.
The UGC became a statutory body in November, 1956 upon the passing of UGC Act 1956 by the Central Government. This Commission become under the Ministry of HRD and it provides recognition to universities in India. It also disburse the fund to the recognised universities and colleges in India. The UGC is charged with determination, co-ordination and maintenance of standard of Higher Studies in the universities in India.
