Mumbai: 9-year-old raped, killed; body found in public toilet

On Thursday, the girl went missing around 6.30pm, when her mother sent her out on a task. The girl’s mother, 29, said, “I want him hanged. I will not perform her last rites till I am convinced that he (accused) will be given death punishment”. She further said, “We went to the Juhu police station at 7.30pm, but the officials came to our house, which is 50m from the police station, only around 11.30pm.”

As per to the Juhu police, the CCTV footage shows Devendra taking the girl inside his house. Police said that the man then raped the girl and murdered her in the late afternoon, but waited till 3am to dump her body in a gutter which is a few metres away.

The girl’s mother then recalled that she saw Devendra gazing at her daughter on her birthday on March 17. The girl was then dressed up and taken to her grandmother’s house, which is near Devendra’s house.

Her mother knew that he was a sex offender, but did not think or realised that the his next target would be her daughter. Devendra’s family also threatened the girl’s family to take of revenge for dishonestly accusing him as per the girl’s family claim.

The girl was then found dead in the drainage chamber of a public toilet in Vile Parle suburb of Mumbai on Saturday, two days after she went missing.

The girl’s grandfather said, “Devendra’s family supplies electricity and water to the slum illegally. He is a history-sheeter. We told the police that they may attack us. We are collecting signatures of all residents to get him to leave the slum. Political party leaders are coming to meet us now, but none of them helped when we were running from pillar to post to find her”.

The Juhu police recently said the autopsy report of the girl has confirmed that she was raped before death. They have also added the IPC section 377 (unnatural offences) in the FIR, the police said.

Commissioner of Police (western) Manoj Kumar Sharma said, “We have booked him for murder, causing disappearance of evidence and rape, and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.”

Against Devendra there have been three cases and the pre-emptive action was also taken against him in the past. He was also found guilty and was imprisoned for raping a five year old girl in the year 2013 and was released from the jail after six months later.
