Ram Jethmalani Renowned lawyer & former Union minister Passes Away at 95: Former Union law minister as well as one of India’s most famous lawyers, Ram Jethmalani, passed away in New Delhi early Sunday morning, just six days before his 96th birthday. Ram Jethmalani son, Mahesh Jethmalani said that his father’s last rites are going to be performed in the evening at Delhi’s Lodhi Road crematorium, as per to news agency PTI.

On this big loss, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered his condolences to Ram Jethmalani’s family along with this he also said that India has lost an exceptional lawyer as well as an iconic public figure.

He tweeted, “One of the best aspects of Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji was the ability to speak his mind. And, he did so without any fear. During the dark days of the Emergency, his fortitude and fight for public liberties will be remembered. Helping the needy was an integral part of his persona.”
PM Modi other tweet reads, “I consider myself fortunate to have got numerous opportunities to interact with Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji. In these sad moments, my condolences to his family, friends and many admirers. He may not be here but his pioneering work will live on! Om Shanti.”

Among the high-profile cases that
Ram Jethmalani fought prominent high-profile cases, among them some of were those for the assassins of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He also defended Manu Sharma in the Jessica Lal murder case, Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh in stock market scams, DMK leader Kanimozhi in the 2G scam as well as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in an offense suit that was filed by the late Arun Jaitley.
Ram Jethmalani is survived by his son, Mahesh Jethmalani, who is also a noted lawyer and a daughter based in the US. A few years ago, he lost other daughters Rani Jethmalani.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Jethmalani’s residence in order to pay his respects. He tweeted, “Deeply pained to know about the passing away of India’s veteran lawyer and former Union Minister Shri Ram Jethmalani ji. In him, we have not only lost a distinguished lawyer but also a great human who was full of life.,”
Jethmalani was also elected as a member of Parliament in the 6th and 7th Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket. He was also a member of the present Rajya Sabha. In the year 2013, he was expelled from the party for six years for making anti-party statements.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also showed his condolence on Jethmalani’s death and described him as an institution. “Extremely saddened at the passing away of legendary lawyer Ram Jethmalani ji. An institution in himself, he shaped criminal law in post-independence India. His void would never be filled and his name will be written in golden words in legal history,” he tweeted.
