Monday night’s 2-1 defeat by Iceland will go down as one of the sunless days in the history of the English national team.

And so it has demonstrated again, possibly understandably, as a country best appreciated for its volcanos and Vikings in Iceland has given the latest pitiful defeat.

As one English commentator said it at the end of the match, “anyone in the England camp this night correlated with that should hang his head in embarrassment. That was a mess. That was English”.

England is now out of Euro 2016, managerless and, like the country on the whole, in a position of darkness and shock. And Twitter has delivered.

And while drinking in the malicious joy of it all, even the ‘Crazy Icelandic Commentator’ has turned up for a profound sequence.

Roy Hodgson stood down in the critical outcome of defeat in Nice, a lack which is arguably the nation’s critical ever.

England being dropped out of a major international tournament without creating a real impression is nothing new, and as ever the Three Lions’ exit provoke a comprehensive mixture of despair and malicious joy.
