It is expected that Vijay Shankar is going to be replaced by Mayank Agarwal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup,”

  • Vijay Shankar had missed the match vs England on Sunday with a toe niggle
  • Shankar is likely to be replaced in the squad by Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal
  • Rishabh Pant had played in place of Rishabh Pant in the Indian playing XI vs England

“The Indian team management is likely to ask for Mayank Agarwal as replacement since he is an opener and also it might give KL Rahul a chance to get back to the No.4 position in case Rishabh Pant fails in the next two games.”

28 year old, Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal made his Test debut last year against Australia and right now he has not yet played in the ODI format.

Vijay Shankar was replaced by Rishabh Pant on Sunday where India played against England in Birmingham. India saw Pant’s getting beaten by 31 runs by England in his debut at the World Cup.

A senior BCCI official said, “Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery once again. His situation is not great and he won’t be able to take part in the tournament. He is going back home,”

Also after the Sunday’s match against England, vice-captain Rohit Sharma talked about Shankar’s injury by saying that “I thought we made it very clear at the start that Vijay (Shankar) would play, but before the game he got a toe issue. He got hit on his toe by Jasprit in the net session, so he was not fully fit for this particular game.”

It is expected that Agarwal’s name is going to be approved by the ICC’s tournament technical committee and the player is also all set to arrive in Birmingham and travel to Leeds afterwards.

In addition, in the morning of the competition, Rohit Sharma had also explained the injury that ruled out Vijay Shankar by stating, “There is no uncertainty with regard to the number four position, Vijay Shankar was supposed to play but before the game he got hit on the toe by Jasprit (Bumrah) and he wasn’t fit. Every team will have these one or two changes happening every now and then.”

In the meantime, India lost their first match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup on Sunday. India was unsuccessful to chase down 338 runs against England at Edgbaston and ended up winning 5 out of their first 6 matches on Sunday.
