We created two Literacy murals representing both the ideas that come from reading and also the House system of our Academy. Students from the school worked with a local professional artist to design the original wall and as it was so successful we created another.
Children made comics and mini-books based on their topic work. The finished comics were displayed in the hall and the children were given the chance to read each other’s comics.
Match Character To AuthorPut up photos of famous contemporary authors around the room. Give each pair a list of their characters and they have to match them up. Bonus points for naming the novel they appear in.
We run a book quiz every year. The House Captains come up to the front of the hall and are asked questions about children’s books. If the team captains get the questions right they get two points, if they have to ask a member of their House from the audience they get one point. The children love the quiz and get very involved in the competition.
Schools video link with each other during World Book Day and choose a book to be read out loud at the same time by the students. One student reads a paragraph and then passes it to another and then to another and then to another school and so on until the book (or the school day) is finished.
This February, I wrapped up books in brown paper & wrote a dating ad style description on the front. Pupils chose a book based on the description. They weren’t allowed to unwrap the book until they left the library. Inside the package was a bookmark for pupils to fill in a book review. One winner was chosen from all the bookmarks that were handed back — they won a box of love heart sweets & a book.
