C. Sylendra Babu is all set to join the prestigious post of Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu from next month. The 1987-batch IPS officer will be replacing JK Tripathy, former DGP, who is going to retire today. On 30th June 2021, the two-year tenure will be completed by JK Tripathy on the post.
To make the decision for selecting the officer who will succeed Tripathy, an Empanelment Committee Meeting was held on 28th June 2021 by the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi. A number of IPS officers’ names were recommended during the session in order to select the most suitable one for the post of Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police and Head of Police Force.
As per to the report, there were total of seven IPS officers’ names that were recommended in the meeting and Sylendra Babu was the one who has been selected among them. While discussing, the list was brought down to top three names and the apparent two IPS officers’ along with Sylendra Babu who were considered to succeed former DGP JK Tripathy were Karan Singha from 1987 batch and Sanjay Arora from 1988 batch.
At last, the Home Department announced the Government Order after the state government made the decision to Sylendra Babu as a new DGP of the state. The announcement was made public on Tuesday by the government. Now, it has been officially announced that C Sylendra Babu will be appointed as the new Tamil Nadu’s DGP who will be taking charge on the post from 1st July 2021.

C. Sylendra Babu is the recently appointed Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu. At the time of writing, he is 59 years of old. He began working in the Tamil Nadu Police Department as 1987-batch IPS Officer. Since he started serving the state as a police officer in 1987, Sylendra Babu has won several awards and accolades.
He was born on 5th June 1962 in Kuzhithurai, Tamil Nadu, India, and completed his schooling from Govt Higher Secondary School, Kuzhithurai. After that he has obtained BSc (Agriculture) degree and then the BGL and MA degrees in Population Studies. He also holds a PhD degree from the University of Madras on the Criminology.
He joined Tamil Nadu Police department as a member of the 1987 batch of Indian Police Service (IPS) and completed his training from National Police Academy, Hyderabad. In 1992, he was appointed as the Superintendent of Police and then the Deputy Inspector-General and Inspector-General in the year 2001 and 2007.
On 22nd April 2012, he was promoted to Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP) and then on 11th Match 2019, he was appointed as the Director-General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu. Now, he has achieved another biggest feat in his police service career being promoted to Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu and he will take the charge from 1st July 2021.
