On Monday, unrest over the police crackdown in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia spread all over the nation on with demonstrations in many campuses, comprising in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai as well as Kolkata.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court said it is going to hear all matters that are related to the new citizenship law on December 18. Protests against the amended act that began in Assam and Bengal previous week have now spread to Delhi as well as Uttar Pradesh, along with the universities in Hyderabad and Mumbai also observing solidarity marches.

As many as 50 students, who have been detained at the Jamia Millia Islamia University in the course of protests against the amended Citizenship Act are now finally released in the early hours of Monday even as demonstrations blow up in universities in Aligarh, Hyderabad and Kolkata just overnight.

Two FIRs over “damage to property” as well as “riots” have been registered by Delhi Police in connection with violence at Jamia Millia Islamia University yesterday.

The Chief Justice further says, “We can see what we can do but not like this. If you want to take to the street, do that but then don’t come to us. Let there be peace and we will see what we can do. If protests and destruction of public properties continue, we won’t hear.”

Four public buses and two police vehicles were burned down for the period of protests in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia, which then further lead to clash with the police which left nearly 60 people, comprising students injured.

The Delhi Metro has reopened the entry and exit gates of stations where operations were affected because of the arson and the ensuing police action at Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition in the assembly Ramesh Chennithala are at a joint protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. “The present atmosphere has been created by BJP-RSS,they are trying to implement their agenda. The situation in the country is volatile. Kerala is standing together against the Citizenship Amendment Act.”

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has now issued a statement condemning “police brutality” on the students of Jamia and Aligarh Muslim University. Syed Sadatullah, JIH president, said in a communique to the media, “We condemn this vindictive action on the student community by the police and hold the government of India responsible for this deplorable act. This episode is bound to invite international condemnation sullying the image of our country,”

The students in Aligarh of the Aligarh Muslim University, have been protesting against the amended Citizenship Act, and some of them were injured following police action at a campus gate, forcing the administration to pronounce the closing of the university till January 5.

Stone-pelting took place between students and police at Nadwa college in Lucknow.

A case has been filed against the Delhi Police for its alleged action that have been taken at the Jamia Milia Islamia Universit, at the National Human Rights Commission.

Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University Najma Akhtar stated in a press conference, “Whatever has happened is not acceptable. The university property was damaged, who will pay for this loss. More than that this is taken an emotional toll on the students.”

Jamia Millia University VC Najma Akhtar further requests, “Don’t pay heed to rumours. Please don’t try to tarnish the image of our university. The beating of the students inside the library primarily is not acceptable. There should be an inquiry into this incidence.”

21 have been arrested in connection with the “clash” following anti-CAA protest at Aligarh Muslim University, police have confirmed the news.

Section 144 has been imposed in all districts of Uttar Pradesh. “Section 144 of CrPC remains imposed in all districts of Uttar Pradesh,” Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi says.

Jamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar says that FIR will be filed against the entry of police. “We will file an FIR against the entry of police in our university campus. You can rebuild the property but you cannot compensate for the things the students went through. We demand a high-level inquiry.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal “I am very concerned about the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. Peace should be restored immediately in Delhi for this, we have asked for an appointment with the Home Minister Amit Shah.”

Protests are now also taking place all over Tamil Nadu as students of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras as well as Loyola College staged demonstrations against the police action in Jamia Millia University.

172 students, staff and faculty of IIM Bengaluru have penned an open letter to the Prime Minister against the police on Jamia students.

Congress’s Ghulam Nabi Azad while addressing a joint press conference of the opposition said, “Students were beaten up by the Police. Protests against Citizenship Amendment Act are taking place across the country,” he also showed some pictures of all the student protests that are taking place.

PM Narendra Modi finally reacts to the protests and says, “Violent protests on the Citizenship Amendment Act are unfortunate and deeply distressing. Debate, discussion and dissent are essential parts of democracy but, never has damage to public property and disturbance of normal life been a part of our ethos.”

PM Modi further says, “I want to unequivocally assure my fellow Indians that CAA does not affect any citizen of India of any religion. No Indian has anything to worry regarding this Act. This Act is only for those who have faced years of persecution outside and have no other place to go except India.”

2: 11 pm

Delhi Police PRO Randhawa said in a statement, “I firstly want to say that Jamia is not a unified campus. There are blocks on either side of the road. When the students came there, they were stopped and then the Delhi police exercised maximum restraint. The same happened on Saturday and the maximum restraint was exercised. On Sunday, protests were staged in which residents of the Jamia area also participated. Our staff showed maximum restraint despite provocations. Around 4:30 pm some protesters went towards Mata Mandir marg and set a bus on fire.”

2: 20 pm

“Government has attacked the constitution & students, they attacked students after entering the university. We will fight for the constitution, we will fight against this government,” says Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on the Jamia violence.
