Netflix on Tuesday revealed their new Original series to its India Slate with the superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma involved as producers on two different projects out of five. As per to the Netflix, Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment is going to produce zombie horror Betaal, while on the other hand, Anushka and Karnesh Sharma’s Clean Slate Films is going to serve as executive producers on Mai.
Other than these two, Netflix has also added three more new original series to its India slate, which comprises of Alankrita Shrivastava, Ravi Patel, and Ashvini Yardi. Apart from Betaal and Mai, the other three new Netflix shows are urban female drama “Bombay Begums”, written as well as directed by Shrivastava. Comedy-drama “Messy”, created by Ravi Patel. The third one is real-life inspired “Masaba Masaba”, created as well as produced by Yardi’s Viniyard Films.
Well, there is no release dates are confirmed right now, but all these five series are expected to release over the next year.
Anushka in a statement said, “This is my second collaboration with Netflix after Bulbul and we are again looking to disrupt the kind of content audiences are consuming. We at Clean Slate Films have been dedicated to making clutter-breaking, powerful stories since our first production and we are looking forward to push the content envelope.”
She added, “The creative freedom to be able to translate these stories to screens that reach a global audience is exciting for us, which is why Netflix is such an important partner,”
Mai is story that revolves around 47-year-old wife and mother, who finds herself by accident entangled with white collar crime and politics following a personal tragedy, which forever changes her and the world she dwell in.
Shah Rukh’s Betaal, on the other hand is set in a remote village for the duration of the British colonial era which is visited by two-century-old Betaal, a British Indian Army officer, and his battalion of zombie. This is also going to mark the actor’s second collaboration with Netflix.
Patrick Graham is going to serve as showrunner and writer-director, who also said in a statement, “Indian legend is filled with tales that thrill, chill and bring the audience to the edge of their seat. It’s a pleasure working with Netflix again on Betaal and to be able to tap the narrative goldmine of Indian stories for a series that brings to life universal conflicts in the engaging and immersive zombie horror genre.”
The plot line also reads, “With Indian police pitted against the undead army, hapless villagers are trapped in a horrific, edge-of-your-seat conflict,”
Bela Bajaria, who is the VP, International Originals, Netflix, said they are very enthusiastic to present these entertaining India-based stories.
