Most popular British crime drama television series, Sherlock, which is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories is rumored to be releasing its fifth season after the last episode of season 4 was aired on 15 January 2017. It’s been more than two years and there are still no words from the BBC or Netflix regarding the next season of Sherlock. However, Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming soon to cinemas with Robert Downey Jr recurring as the detective.
Sherlock Season 5 Release Date
Netflix Sherlock season 5 could be released in Q2, 2020, however, there is no official timeline yet. We are pretty sure that this British Television collection of criminal drama is going to impress a lot of people which is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories with the same name. In the main lead, we will see our Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch in the leading role as always. Also, Martin Freeman is supporting him as the doctor John Watson in the show. Even though there are no plans that have been revealed just yet but if we believe some rumors and clues then BBC or Netflix may possibly soon be able to make the announcement.
The fourth season of Sherlock was aired on 1 January 2017 and was concluded on 15 January 2017. From then till now, there has been no news regarding the 5th season of Sherlock.
On asking about the next season, the Co-showrunner Steven Moffat told Digital Spy: “I haven’t really thought about it. Mark [Gatiss, co-showrunner]’s been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.”
On the other hand, a disclosure from the owner of Speedy’s cafe which is featuring in the show, Chris Georgiou in a Time Out article has headed some to think fifth season may possibly be much nearer than we are actually expecting.
In the piece, he said: “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’ve heard they’ll be coming back for a fifth season.”
However Gatiss has called this “utter nonsense,” by showing the fact that Steven Moffat is no longer going to work on Doctor Who and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is not coming soon which then make us think that the pair may have more time on their hands.
Would Sherlock Cast Be Same in Season 5?
The show is produced by the British community, the BBC. It has around more than 13 episodes and people are waiting for the season patiently. It is expected that the show will release in 2022 even some sources are saying that it will release before the given year. So far, the makers or even the Netflix has shared nothing about the release date of Sherlock Season 5.

As for sure these two will definitely return to season 5, as they are the main lead of the series without them there is of no use and sense.
There are also possibilities that in season 5, Gatiss would return to play Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes. While Martin Freeman doesn’t seem to be so keen for the next season, on the other hand, Cumberbatch is keen and always ready to return to the character again.
In 2014, Cumberbatch told Vogue, “If we can keep the quality up, I can’t imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock.”
In the year 2017, he also said to GQ that “The idea of never playing him again is really galling.”

Moffat shared his point of view about the future through a Facebook post where he deliberated the first four seasons as Chapter One and wrote:
“Dr Watson is now Doyle’s brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories (we’ve focused, so far, on the cold Holmes of the early days.)”
He then moved on to write Chapter Two as “our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers”.
