India’s First Oscar Winner Bhanu Athaiya Passes Away at 91, Mumbai Live Updates

Today we gonna tell you about the shocking news which has arrived at us in the morning hours of Thursday. The news is about the titan of costume design named -Bhanu Rajopadhye Athaiya who took her last breath on Thursday itself. As we all know that Athaiya being an Oscar Awardee along with grabbing the title of first Indian to have the Oscar for the first time as being recorded majorly. She had been awarded for her work in Attenborough’s Richard (Gandhi) in 1982. Along with the work she provides in the chic couture in blockbusters like blazed fashion trends (Talking about Waqt of 1965).

Bhanu Athaiya Passes Away

If we talk about her career, so we get to know that She worked around in 100 films, with filmmakers of India such as Yash Chopra, B.R. Chopra, Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Vijay Anand, Raj Khosla & Ashutosh Gowariker along with the international directors such as Conrad Rooks & Richard Attenborough.

She made her first film(debut) as a costume designer with the movie titled as C.I.D. in 1956 and reflected it up with many other films of Guru Dutt such as Pyaasa (1957), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). In her spanning 50 years of Career she has undergone various awards. She won the Academy Award  (Best Costume Design) that got distributed with John Mollo for her performance in the movie of 1982, Gandhi. She grew to be the first Indian to receive an Academy Award. She also received out two National Film Awards, in 1991 and 2002.

Radhika Gupta, her daughter said TOI on the phone call that her mother marks her last breath occurrence in sleep only on Thursday night. Alongside, she added that her mother is having a brain tumor since 2012. Due to all this, she is on the bed since 2016 as her body’s right side got paralyzed. She passes away at age of 91 & her cremation is done under South Mumbai at Chandanwani. May her soul rest in peace..!! For more updates & information, stay tuned with DekhNews..!!
