India is currently competing at the Summer Olympics 2020 that is taking place in Tokyo capital of Japan and under the women’s Welterweight boxing event, the 23-year old, Lovlina Borgohain is representing our country under 69kg category. By doing this, she has become the first woman from the Assam State to qualify for the Olympics and also the second boxer from her state to represent India after Shiva Thapa, who took part in the 2012 London Olympics and was the youngest boxer from the country to qualify for the same. She played her first match against the German Amateur boxer, Nadine Apetz and defeated her by 3-2.

On 30th July 2021, Friday, she defeated Taiwanese middleweight boxer, Chen Nien-chin by a vast margin of 3, scoring 4 points, while the opposing boxer scored 1 point, thus, assuring her medal. The 23-year old boxer has entered the semi-finals match and will compete against the current world champion, Busenaz Surmeneli Boxer of Turkey, who has previously defeated Anna Lysenko of Ukraine. The Semi-final 1 match between B. Surmeneli (Turkey) and L. Borgohain (India) is scheduled to take place on 4th August 2021, Wednesday at 11:00 AM (IST).

The 23-year old Assam Boxer, Lovlina Borgohain was born on 2nd October 1997 and comes from the Golgahat district of Assam in India. Raised by her mother, Mamoni Borgohain and her father, Tiken, Borgohain wanted to become a boxer from the very starting. However, as her father is a Small-scale entrepreneur, and he fought financially to promote the dreams of his daughter. Borgohain interest in Boxing was something that she developed since childhood, upon watching her twin elder sister, Lima and Licha who took part in numerous kickboxing matches at the national level.

Lovlina initially started her career as a kickboxer, however, later she shifted from kickboxing to boxing when she discovered the occasion to do so. She was doing her high school at the Barpathar Girls High School when the Sports Authority of India conducted a trial at her school. Lovlina participated in that trial and was eventually selected by one of the prominent coaches, Padum Boro, who started to train her in 2012. Later, she went under the mentorship of coach Sandhya Gurung.

Lovlina participated in the 2018 Commonwealth gamer under the category of Welterweight boxing, when she reached the quarterfinals and played against the English professional boxer, Sandy Ryan. Although she lost to Ryan, it certainly added a stepping stone in her triumph at the International boxing championship. She won a gold medal at the First India Open International boxing championship and later won silver at the second and from there on, there was on turning back.

She brought a bronze medal for India at the Women’s AIBA 2018 & 2019 boxing tournament, and by qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, she became the first woman from Assam and also the second boxer to represent India at the Olympics. In the year 2020, the government of India honoured her with the Arjuna Award for her outstanding performance in sports, thus, eventually becoming the sixth person from Assam to received such a prestigious award.
