PM Narendra Modi To Meet Donald Trump

Though India isn’t a member of the G7 or Group of Seven of the world’s most advanced economies, as per International Monetary Fund data Modi has been invited by French President Emmanuel Macron. The two sessions wherein he will be participating are on Climate, Biodiversity, Oceans & on Digital Transformation besides also holding bilaterals with leaders of other countries participating in the two-day summit.

The most talked-about meeting will be with US President Donald Trump that is scheduled from 3.45 pm to 4.30 pm. This will be the first time that Modi and Trump would meet after New Delhi abrogated Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The same issue might be discussed along with some trade issues.

Earlier this week in Washington, Trump has said that he would discuss with Modi the situation in Kashmir and help ease the India-Pakistan tensions when they meet at the G7 Summit.

Also, a senior Trump administration official had said in a backgrounder teleconference on Trump’s G7 summit that India’s decision to rescind Article 370 in Kashmir is an internal decision, but certainly with regional implications. And President Trump will likely want to hear how Prime Minister Modi intends to calm regional tensions in light of this significant move.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi has already met British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday evening. The talks with the British PM was focused on trade and investment, defence and security.

It is after a gap of more than 10 years that India has been invited at the G7summit, the last time being in 2005 when the then British Prime Minister Tony Blair had invited the then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Gleneagles summit.
