UAE woman files for divorce after husband stops her from playing PUBG

Every now and then, it’s been heard that the popular battle royale game, PUBG, has been the cause of a lot of troubles. And now the Gulf News has reported that a young woman in the UAE has sought a divorce from her husband after he reportedly attempted to ban her from playing the popular battle royale game.

Director of the Social Centre at Ajman Police, Captain Wafa Khalil who was handling the case told Gulf News, “The woman justified her demand for divorce by saying that she was being deprived of her right to chose her means of entertainment as she derived pleasure and comfort from the game.”

The report goes on to explain that the husband decided to step in and stop his wife from playing the game too much after he realised that she was getting addicted to it, and the addiction was hampering her ability to focus on her family. However, as Capt Al Hosani explained this move by the husband did not go down well with the Arab woman who instead approached the centre seeking help.

Director said, “The woman justified her demand for divorce by saying that she was being deprived of her right to choose her means of entertainment as she derived pleasure and comfort from the game. It was well within limits, she said, adding that she had not activated the chat option where she would be exposed to strangers and was playing the game only with her friends and relatives.”

In the entire scenario, the main reason behind the husband stopping his wife to play the game was, he feared that she would soon become addicted to the game and as result neglect her duties as a wife.

While the woman maintains that her husband is depriving her of her basic rights, the man claims that his opposition to his wife playing the game is not a matter of “suppression of freedom”, but rather a move to ensure that their family is not affected by this case of “PUBG addiction”.

He further went on to claim that his objection was a valid one and his wife overreacting by asking for a divorce is a sign of her getting addicted to the game which in the past has been found to be at the center of many such stories of addiction. This case also comes on the back of many similar complaints, and a recent ban in Iraq for “inciting violence”.
