Sumit Nagal Wins ATP Challenger Title, To Enter Top 135 in Rankings

On Monday, Indian Tennis player Sumit Nagal bagged the Buenos Aires Challenger Tournament after defeating home favourite Facundo Bognis in the men’s singles final at the USD 54,160 ATP Challenger Tournament.

The 22-year-old from Haryana jumped of 26 spots in order to succeed a career-best ranking of 135 on Monday.

He has been currently ranked at 161 and now he has successfully registered a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win over Bognis in an hour and 37 minutes. This has now made him the first Asian to bag the ATP Challenger title in Buenos Aires.

Nagal had beaten local hope Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals and has now finally entered final after steamrolling Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-final round.

The 22-year-old from Haryana, seeded seventh, surpassed 8th seed Bognis of Argentina 6-4, 6-2 in a small time span of an hour and 37 minutes in order to win the title.

This was the second Challenger title of Sumit’s career, succeeding the triumph in the Bengaluru Challenger event in the year 2017.

In the recent time, the rising Indian tennis star had made the headlines after making his Grand Slam debut against Roger Federer in the US Open which was concluded recently.

Sport minister Kiren Rijiju while appreciating Sumit’s achievement, wrote on his twitter handle, “Brilliant performance @nagalsumit and I extend hearty Congratulations on Winning ATP Buenos Aires Challenger Title. Sumit Nagal will enter Top 135 in Rankings!,”

The talented youngster jumped of 26 spots in order to attain a career-best ranking of 135 that was held on Monday.

Previous month, Nagal grasped the headlines after he made his Grand Slam debut as well as produced a spirited fight against the legendary Roger Federer that was held in the first-round of the U.S. Open.

In addition, Sumit had also achieved his career-best ATP ranking of 159 last month after concluding runner-up in the Banja Luka ATP Challenger, where he was defeated from Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the finale round.
