Director Sudipto Sen’s controversial film The Kerala Story hit the theaters on Friday amidst criticism for its alleged factual inaccuracies. Upon its release, the film opened to poor reviews, but it seems to have caught the attention of audiences, as evidenced by the good opening at the box office. Bollywood Hungama reported that Rs 4 crore came from three national chains, PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis. Looking at the response the film has received from the audience, theater owners have added more shows of the film, and its collections at the ticket counters are expected to increase over the weekend.
The Kerala Story Box Office Collection
Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani, The Kerala Story was first officially described as the story of over 32,000 Kerala women who were allegedly radicalized by Islamic fundamentalists. However, the number was changed from 32,000 to three after online protests started against the misinformation being spread by the film. In terms of its box office collections, The Kerala Story is among the top five openers of 2023 so far. The list is topped by Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathan (Rs 55 cr), followed by Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 15.81 cr), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (Rs 15.7 cr) and Bhola (Rs 11.2 cr). The Kerala Story had a better opening day than Akshay Kumar’s Selfie (Rs 2.55 cr) and Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada (Rs 6 cr) and the equally controversial The Kashmir Files (Rs 3.5 cr).
However, the film has not impressed the critics. The Indian Express Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review of the film, The film itself is nothing more than a poorly made, poorly acted rant that is not interested in questioning the social complexities of Kerala, The state of India is proud of its multi-cultural, religious, multi-ethnic identity. Its purpose is to convey that Kerala is in danger as its innocent, naive Hindu and Christian girls are being seduced by evil Muslim men, and radicalized as a point of no return.
