Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) initiated a hasty search, but the rangers were unable to locate the pair overnight. Potter and Hunt had been attempting to fly along terrain that required them to clear a notch in a rocky ridgeline. Potter has been a fixture on the climbing and BASE-jumping scene in Yosemite since the late 1990s.

Someone called for help late Saturday after losing contact with Potter, 43, and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, 29. They had jumped from a 7,500-foot promontory called Taft Point, park ranger Scott Gediman said. He said a search-and-rescue team looked for the men overnight but couldn’t find them. On Sunday morning, a helicopter crew spotted their bodies in Yosemite Valley.

Potter had wear wingsuits, a skin tight suit with batwing sleeves and a flap between their legs which help them to glide. But, however their parachutes had not been developed properly and he met this accident. It was not immediately clear whether either deployed his parachute, and Gediman said a full investigation by park officials into the deaths was underway. This is an horrible incident and very shocking for the family and friends of Dean Potter.

Dean Potter wan born on April 14, 1972 and died on May 16, 2015. This accident of one of the generation’s top rock climbers and charismatic personalities is shocking and our sympathies are with his family and friends. This is a huge loss for all of us.
