Kanpur: On Thursday, an old dalit man 26 years died in police custody under suspicious circumstances in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Twelve police personnel have been suspended after this incident.
Kamal Valmiki was a resident of Shiv Katra village. He was found dead at Ahirwan police station after he was picked up along with another man, Raju Mistri, yesterday in a case of loot.
Firstly, Police called the family of Mistri to identify the body, but it was later claimed by family of Kamal.
The deceased kamal’s family members filed an FIR against the station in charge and other police personnel for brutally beating Kamal to death. But the Uttar Pradesh police claimed that he had committed suicide and sent the body for postmortem.
Shalabh Mathur who is SSP, Mathura said that 12 police personnel, including Yogendra Singh who is the station in charge have been suspended and strict action will be taken against them if they found guilty.
The people from Valmiki community blocked the Kanpur-Lucknow highway. The angered people threw stones at the police station and the public vehicles following which senior police officials reached there to control the situation. Meanwhile, Raju Mistri has been reported missing.
